Theme of the Fund Drive is “Partners for a Healthier Community.”

SENATOR
MARY JO WHITE
TOURS THE CLINIC

Senator Mary Jo White recently toured the Clinic with a video team from Harrisburg. The video will be shown on local TV channels in Senator White’s district when produced. Senator White is very supportive of the Clinic; she hopes that other counties in the Commonwealth will join the five (including Butler) who have already established free clinics.

Senator White’s office was instrumental in obtaining the grant from the Department of Community and Economic Development that purchased examining tables for the Clinic.

STRATEGIC PLANNING

A Strategic Planning Committee of the Board has been meeting to determine the future goals and direction of the Clinic. Dr. Nicholas Neupauer, President of BC3, is chair of the committee and Dr. Steve Catt of the college is facilitating the effort.

DIABETIC EDUCATION CLASSES TO START JULY 3RD

The first session of the series of four diabetic education classes will be held on July 3rd at 5:00 p.m. at the Clinic. These classes help diabetics manage their disease, and are subsidized by the grant the Clinic received from the Lions International Foundation.

The classes will be held once a month and will be limited to 10 patients, each of whom may bring a support person. (Research has found that it helps patients to have someone else who is knowledgeable about the diet and lifestyle recommendations).

Once patients complete all four classes they will receive a gas card, good for a discount at the fuel pump.

The Clinic plans to provide other educational classes, such as nutrition counseling and smoking cessation.

NORM SHIMMEL
A SPECIAL VOLUNTEER

Norm

Norm Shimmel, one of our wonderful volunteers, has developed a special computer program for our pharmacy; it has simplified operations and inventory, so that everyone can understand and keep track of them. The program tracks medications, those prescribed for patients – who prescribed, them, how many were prescribed, how many refills – as well as tracking inventory. A red flag pops up on the screen to notify users that a medicine needs to be re-ordered.

It also tracks everything in several categories: according to medicine, according to patient, the professional prescribing – in short, all the information needed to keep the pharmacy running smoothly. This program, which Norm has contributed, would have cost $6500 if we had had to purchase it.

Norm is currently working on a program to categorize and track our volunteers.

Thank you, Norm!
